Mark Zuckerberg Envisions a Massive Economy in the Metaverse
Following Facebook’s 2014 acquisition of Oculus VR, the company has invested billions in pivoting toward the next generation of content: the metaverse—even going as far as to rebrand its prestigious name from Facebook to Meta.
On June 23, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared virtually on CNBC, where he outlined the company’s future plans: they expect to reach one billion people interacting in the metaverse and spending hundreds of dollars on virtual commerce, whether it’s digital goods, NFTs, or avatar accessories.
Zuckerberg foresees a massive economy around the metaverse—similar to what he built with Facebook and Instagram—and now aims to replicate it through Meta.
Additionally, the CEO stated that the company is heavily investing in AI development to boost revenue by up to 97%. This AI would work similarly to TikTok’s algorithm, delivering highly personalized content:
“Our AI system can choose based on what it knows about you and what you’re personally interested in—and it will learn what you want to see.”
